The Appalachian State University Counseling and Psychological Services center offers two Postgraduate Residency positions each academic year. The residency is a full-time (40hr/week), 12 month position that typically begins August 1st each year and ends July 31st.
At the Appalachian State Counseling Center, we are committed to the concept of excellence in training within an active service-oriented agency. The center is the only psychological service agency on campus and provides a full range of services to the University community. The background and training of the Counseling Center staff reflect diversity in experience, interests, and theoretical orientations. Residents are trained to be well-rounded generalists.
Postgraduate Residents work in close collaboration with staff members and perform many of the same responsibilities. Residents will have the opportunity to receive a minimum of one hour per week of individual supervision from licensed psychologists as they engage in individual, group, and couples therapy in addition to outreach, consultation, daytime and after-hours crisis intervention, intake interviewing, provision of supervision for Masters-level trainees, referral services, evaluation, and program development. Two hours per week will be provided for licensure preparation.
Postdoctoral Residents have the option of completing a specialization track. Specializations can be created based on the Resident’s interests and career goals in collaboration with the Training Director and Director. Examples of specializations completed by previous Postdoctoral Residents include eating concerns, administration, and outreach.
Postdoctoral Residents will receive a standard University benefits package including medical insurance and retirement options. Earned vacation days and sick leave are also provided.
