The Counseling Center offers various training experiences for graduate students, including practicum and externship (as well as adjunct/second site) placements. We have hosted graduate students from Appalachian State University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program, the Master's in Social Work (MSW) program, Clinical Psychology PsyD program, and Marriage and Family Therapy program. Though our practicum and extern trainees are typically from graduate programs at Appalachian State, we are happy to consider applications from similar programs at other schools.

Applicants should make certain to submit an email copy and contact the Masters Level Training Coordinator to verify the application has been received. Applicants are requested to please print a copy of the completed application for personal records and possible submission should there be a problem with the original email submission.
The Counseling Center offers after-hours emergency coverage for urgent mental health concerns such as suicidal thoughts, sexual assault, and other trauma. Call the Counseling Center at (828)262-3180 and select the option to speak with the counselor on-call.
