Information for Parents
Welcome parents! We take great pleasure in the quality of our center. We are accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS). Our Counseling Center is welcome to all students and we offer a range of services to assist students with many of their personal concerns so that they can succeed in meeting the daily challenges being a student can create. We are glad to be able to help your child as well as offer assistance to you.
Our services are free and confidential to all students with a valid ASU Banner ID Number. We are located in the Miles Annas Student Services Building (located in the same building as the post office). We can be reached at (828) 262-3180 during normal business hours (M-F 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The Counseling Center also offers emergency services that are available to students after hours, when school is in session. To reach our after-hours, on campus, emergency service, you can call the Campus Police Department at (828) 262-2150, which will then activate the system.
We have included a number of links within the information provided here that we believe can be helpful in supporting your student in making the transition to college, as well as information regarding how to respond if you believe your student is experiencing emotional distress. Remember that it is normal for you and your student to occasionally struggle with loneliness, fear, anxiety, stress, homesickness, etc. and we are here, as needed, to help you and your student respond and cope with such psychological distress.
Another great resource for both parents and students concerning the unique challenges students may face when transitioning into college can be found here, www.transitionyear.org. Whether you need help picking a school that is the best fit, are looking for tips on managing stress once on campus, or want guidance in making a smooth transition for a student dealing with an issue like depression, this site has the tools and information you need. The Transition Year is an online resource center to help parents and students focus on emotional health before, during and after the college transition.
