Information for Parents and Families
The Counseling Center’s services are free and confidential. Enrolled students are eligible for an initial consultation to determine their treatment needs (which may include referral to other resources on or off campus). We are located in the Miles Annas Student Services Building (the same building as the post office). If you wish to consult with us regarding concerns about your student, we can be reached at (828)262-3180 during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm).
The Counseling Center also offers emergency services that are available to students when school is in session. If a student is experiencing a psychological emergency (e.g. exhibiting signs of being homicidal or suicidal, suggesting danger to self or others), we may break confidentiality if this is required to assist your student in staying safe. In such situations, we might contact you to assist us in this process. If you are concerned about the safety of your student, we encourage you to contact us during business hours at (828)-262-3180. For after-hours emergencies, you or your student may call the same number and select the option to speak to the on-call counselor.
We also encourage you to explore the Self-Help resources on our website; this is organized by subject and includes books, smartphone apps, websites, and more that you and your student may find helpful in managing common concerns.
