The Center staff accepts and trains students enrolled in Clinical Psychology Practicum I and II. Students completing practicum I/II in the Center must work for 10 hours per week for one semester. The 10 hour requirement exceeds that of the Department of Psychology but the staff feels that it is the minimum requirement to provide adequate training. Emphasis is placed on individual counseling and diagnostic skills in this training experience.

Masters-Level Externships
The ASU Counseling Center externships offer an internship training experience. We refer to our Masters Level Trainees as externs in order to distinguish this training from our pre-doctoral internship opportunity.
The center staff accepts and trains masters-level counseling and clinical psychology externs. The externship is a supervised 30 hour placement at the Center for two semesters. This requirement may be longer than is required by the department but our staff believes that two full semesters is required to provide adequate training. The emphasis includes training in individual counseling, diagnostics, and intake interviewing. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in specialized training in such areas as substance abuse counseling, group counseling, wellness, biofeedback, outreach, and career counseling. This externship is designed to prepare students to practice as a licensed professional or for doctoral-level training.

Other Training Opportunities
Wellness Center - Students may pursue a training experience in the Wellness Center focusing on Biofeedback service delivery and related preventive and educational services in the Wellness Center. Specific activities, policies, and procedures are handled by the Director of the Wellness Center. Time and service requirements will be dovetailed with departmental requirements on an individual basis.
Non-Clinical Student Development Externship - Student Development students may arrange an externship that is non-clinical in nature. Specific activities are arranged with the Training Director.
Satellite Program Training - The Wellness Center, the Alcohol and Drug Assistance Program, and the Peer Career Center offer training programs for students. Policies and procedures for these programs are contained in separate training manuals.
Diversity Graduate Assistantship - The diversity graduate assistantship normally completes an externship in the counseling center. The externship includes 30 hours per week for two semesters for counseling and clinical students. During the externship, training focuses on individual counseling/psychotherapy and outreach programming. As the Diversity Graduate Assistant, the extern is also expected to engage in activities that assist the Center in reaching out and providing services to minority students. Specific activities are negotiated but often include targeted outreach programming and groups for special populations.
