Scope of Services
Appalachian State University’s Counseling and Psychological Services Center has as its primary purpose the prevention of psychological difficulties and the treatment of the mental health concerns of its students.
The scope of service includes the following for students currently enrolled in classes:
- Brief individual counseling
- Brief couples counseling
- Group counseling
- Workshops and educational programming
- Crisis services when school is in session
- Initial interview assessments, recommendations and referrals
- Consultations
- Clinical and Self guided biofeedback
In light of the high demand for counseling services, the Counseling Center offers brief therapy. We find that most students experience improvement within 1-5 sessions. Therefore, individual and couples counseling sessions are limited to ten sessions per academic year. Students who present with concerns that are likely to require more than ten sessions are referred to off-campus practitioners who are able to provide longer term and more appropriate care.
