Individual Counseling

The Counseling Center provides short-term individual counseling to currently-enrolled Appalachian State University students. Individual counseling is an opportunity to talk confidentially with a counselor about personal concerns and to facilitate personal growth. The counselor and client work together to define and discuss personal issues and to reach mutually agreed upon goals. Issues may include:
  • Depression
  • Anxiety Management
  • Relationship Difficulties
  • Separation From Parents
  • Adjustment to College
  • Eating Concerns/Body Image
  • Grief and Loss
  • Sexuality/Gender Identity Issues
  • Substance Use and Abuse
  • Cultural Adaptation
  • Roommate Conflicts
  • Isolation and Loneliness
Sessions are generally 50 minutes one time per week, and usually last for less than 10 weeks. If needed, a referral to a private therapist or community service will be made as early as possible.
